Students at AJ Schmidt Elementary have held elections for student council. Prior to elections, our fifth grade students campaigned for the position of treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president. Students created posters and campaign slogans which they prominently displayed throughout the building. They wrote speeches describing what qualifications they have as a candidate for "public office" and what they would focus on if they were elected. Students in grades K - 5 came to the cafeteria to meet the candidates and hear their speeches. Some had campaign promises like "allow gum chewing in school" or "have student after-school activities like drama club or art club." Students did a good job preparing their campaign speeches and delivering their speeches to the student body.Students learned what being an elected representative of a group of people means first hand and the responsibilities that go with it. They learned that they have to establish others' trust and confidence in themselves. They also learned that charisma and a positive, upbeat personality with a can-do attitude makes a positive impression on voters. Students who participated were: Kaitlin Chiavetta, Bianca Mancini, Branden Hutchinson, Elissa Norton, Autumn Schunk, Shylah Baca, Nolan Thomas, Evie Butlak, Emilee DeGraff, Marcus Evans, Olivia Alvira, Caitlin Burbige, and Bailey Stoehr.Voting was held on Friday, October 7th and the students elected were: Treasurer - Bianca Mancini, Secretary - Autumn Schunk, Vice President - Nolan Thomas, President - Olivia Alvira. Congratulations to all our student council candidates for their effort and diligence. Thanks to Mr. Matt Adams, Mrs. Mary Brumagin, and Mrs. Amanda Galenda for coaching students and assisting with the campaigns.
