On Thursday, January 31, 2008 the Lake Shore Central School District was notified by the United States Department of Agriculture to place a hold on 29 boxes or 1,160 pounds of ground meat that was acquired through the federal school lunch program from Westland/Hallmark Meat Company.   This product was immediately contained and not consumed.

On Sunday, February 17, 2008 the United States Department of Agriculture issued an official recall on the same 29 boxes of ground meat, which was placed on hold in January. This product will now be disposed of appropriately, following the correct procedures and standards set forth by the USDA. The destruction must be witnessed by at least two people and verified to the New York Office of General Services Food Distribution and Warehousing Department by quantity, type of product, and destruction method.
The Lake Shore Central School District will continue to monitor this situation very closely and continue to ensure the health and safety of the school-community.
