Welcome to the 2008-9 School Year!

Dear Parents,

I am very excited to work with you and your child this year! First Grade will prove to be a very challenging yet rewarding year for your child. I can assure you that I will do everything possible to make it a successful and enjoyable year as well.

In order to help your child to get back into the learning mode, I would like to offer a few suggestions:

Begin Fostering Good Work Habits Now
. Choose a time during the day or evening that will be designated as STUDY TIME. At that time, have your child go to a quiet area to practice writing letters and numbers; reviewing sight words, letters and their sounds; etc. Study time should last between 15 and 30 minutes during the summer. It may last a bit longer during the school year. Periods too much longer than this may result in loss of attention, boredom, and frustration for all involved. If a task will take longer than 30 minutes to complete, it may be wise to split the session so that your child can have a break.

Read to Your Child Everyday. I believe that this is one of the very best things that you can do for your child. In fact, it has been shown to be an indicator of success! Studies show that children who have been read to at least 3x/week perform at a higher level in the area of English/Language Arts than those who have not! Reading to your child incorporates language arts (How one
expresses himself and understands others), listening skills, prediction, critical thinking, and problem solving to name but a few skills!

Involve your child in stimulating activities. Take your child to the park, zoo, museum, beach, library, or your workplace. Take the time to play a game with your child or allow him or her to help in preparing a meal. The object is to speak with your child throughout the activity and explain things as you go. You’ll both have fun!

Boost Your Child’s Self Esteem. Find at least one reason to “pat your child on the back” every day. Praise your child for neat papers, chores well done, good school attendance, etc. Continue this practice throughout the year. Better yet, why not continue throughout his or her lifetime! This tends to have a dramatic effect on your child’s willingness to learn.

WHAT TO BRING

There are several items that your child will need to bring to school on the first day:

1 package of pencils - I will keep these in my desk and will distribute to your child as needed. Please be sure to label the package with your child’s name.

scissors- optional

crayons and/or colored pencils

art smock- any large t-shirt will do.

pencil box - large enough to hold all crayons and a pencil or two.

erasers - pink pearl are best.

1 black & white (or other color) composition book.

pocket folder (3 holes and Pockets only, Please)

glue sticks (2)

2 FAMILY-SIZED boxes of tissues - These will be shared with the class and should get us through the year.

4 Dry-Erase Markers - dark colors (Eraser is optional)

(2) 1” binders

1 box of quart-sized zip-lock bags with slide tabs

1 box of gallon-sized zip-lock bags with slide tabs

CLASSROOM RULES

I would like to outline our basic classroom rules. Please discuss these rules with your child before the first day of school. If he or she understands what is expected,
the transition to First Grade will be much easier.

1. Follow directions the first time they are given.

2. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

3. Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking.

4. Clean up after yourself.

5. Always walk in the classroom and hallways.

Finally, I am proud to announce that we will have a student teacher this fall! His name is Mr. Holmes. He will be with us until late October. Mr. Holmes lives in Buffalo with his wife and 2 beautiful daughters. I am very excited to be working together with him. I am sure that your child will adore him!

I am looking forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year. I hope that you will feel free to contact me at any time that you have questions or concerns. Your child will bring his/her agenda home every day. PLEASE review what was written and check for notes from me. Sign the agenda everyday so that I know that you were informed of the Info Of The Day. Those who choose not to follow through with the agenda are often caught unaware of important information regarding their child or about tests, etc. This is where misunderstandings often get their start. Let’s work together to make this a great year that your child will never forget!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Carol Zeffiro 549-2775 hm
