Dear Lake Shore Parents / Guardians:
I would like to take this opportunity to address the D.A.R.E. program situation for the 2009 - 2010 school year.
As you may be aware, the District received notice from the Town of Evans Chief of Police, Ernest P. Masullo on July 23rd, which stated, "Due to manpower and budget constraints, I am forced to reassign the DARE officer to normal duties during the 2009-2010 school year. Because of this I will be unable to supply an officer for the classroom portion of the DARE program.” Therefore, the D.A.R.E. program will be suspended in the District for the 2009-2010 school year.
It is important to note that the District is working diligently with the Town of Evans and the Police Department's liaison to the District, Lieutenant Tom George, in order to identify another vehicle to support community policing in our schools. Furthermore, the District has had in place, for several years, effective prevention programs through its partnership with Western New York United Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Inc. Those programs are as follows: Life Skills for Grade 5, Conflict Resolution for Kindergarten through Grade 4, and Tutoring Services across grade levels. The District is also exploring further prevention programs that will target our Middle School students.
As we move foreword, we will keep you informed of our efforts to continue to educate our children and foster positive relationships with our local police department. Your understanding and support during this critical transition is appreciated.
Jeffrey R. Rabey, Superintendent of Schools
