At Brant Elementary, one of our secrets for academic success this year are the S.M.A.R.T. goals that everyone has written. This includes teachers, students, and yes - even the Principal.
One clear fact backed by years of data is that children and adults who
set S.M.A.R.T. goals are highly successful in reaching or even
surpassing those goals. Many people think of setting a goal similar to
a New Year's resolution. In fact unless a goal or New Year's
resolution is prepared a certain way, it's likely to fail. The secret
for success is to choose a goal that is
- Specific,
- Measureable,
- Attainable,
- Realistic, and has a
- Timeframe.
SMART goals have a plan which list the small steps necessary to move
closer to the goal. SMART goals also identify possible obstacles that
should be anticipated and have some strategies planned to overcome the
obstacle. Most important - SMART goals are written and within plain view.
This year our students are writing their S.M.A.R.T. goals for academic
improvement and keeping them within reach so they can refer to their
goal and review their plans for achieving their goal throughout the year.
In our Opening Day assembly, I told the students to be prepared because
I will be asking students at random what they wrote for their
S.M.A.R.T. goal and how they are doing. I'm hoping parents will also
ask their children about their academic plans for improvement and what
daily steps they can take to ensure success.
Best wishes with your S.M.A.R.T. goals!
