The Art Program at LakeShore Central Middle School aligns with the New York State Learning Standards and the LakeShore Central School District Comprehensive and Sequential Art Curriculum Guide.

Lessons are designed to address the interests, needs, and creative energy of our middle school students. In art class, students are actively involved in brainstorming, designing, problem-solving, inventing, evaluating, re-designing, and having fun! Individuality is respected and success is celebrated!

Grading Policy for Art

Students have Art at the Middle School every day for one trimester (1/3 of the school year, about 13 weeks). Each class involves instruction and then the students are given the opportunity to respond creatively within the guidelines of the assignment, following the New York State Art Standards.

Each project is graded using the following criteria:
  • Students did the requirements of the assignment. (Note: Requirements are clearly stated when the assignment is first given)…………………….......................………………50 Points Possible
  • Students worked creatively as shown in the creative additions that make each work of art unique and an expression of each student’s individuality…..................................................……25 Points Possible
  • Students worked neatly with good craftsmanship...15 Points Possible
  • Students overall class performance (self-control, clean-up)
....10 Points Possible
TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE PER PROJECT…………….........100 POINTS

“Projects” might be artwork, written assignments, presentations, or homework sketches.

Students are expected to do 8 assigned sketches outside of art class as homework on unlined white paper. Each sketch is worth a possible 100 points. Students can easily get 100 points on a sketch if they:
  • Draw what is assigned
  • Add details creatively
  • Fill the space---good “composition”
  • Add some shading
  • Add some pattern somewhere
Note: Students are not expected to draw like Michelangelo when they do their sketches. They are encouraged to draw in their own style---some students draw photo-realistically and some students draw boldly with great expression. If they include what is listed above, they can easily get a high score on their sketches.

Each project, written assignment, presentation, or sketch is given a percentage score based on the 100 possible points. If a student gets 95 points out of a possible 100 points, his/ her percentage score would be 95%. These percentage scores are averaged to arrive at the student’s final Art grade.

New York State Art Standards
I. Students will actively engage in creating works of art that explore different kinds of subject matter, topics, themes, and metaphors. Students will understand and use sensory elements, organizational principles, and expressive images to communicate their own ideas in works of art.

II. Students will know and use a variety of visual art materials, techniques, and processes. Students will know about resources and opportunities for participation in visual arts in the community (exhibitions, library, museums, and galleries) and will be aware of vocational options available in the visual arts.

III. Students will respond to and analyze, interpret, and evaluate works of art using the language of art criticism.

IV. Students will develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication. By exploring art and artifacts from various historical periods and world cultures, students will discover the roles that art plays in the lives of people of a given time and place.

Dear Parents:
Parents are very important to the Art Program at LakeShore Central Middle School. The best thing that you can do is to give your middle school artist your encouragement, support, and sincere appreciation for their artistic efforts. Remember that since the invention of the camera, artwork doesn't need to be realistic to be good. Celebrate the uniqueness of your son/daughter's art style!

Parents can also volunteer to help at Art Show time. If you can use a stapler, your services are needed!

Also, parents are great "scouts" for awesome art materials. One parent brought in hundreds of tall Plexiglas tubes- a great resource with so many possibilities! Another parent recycles all kinds of containers that helps to keep art materials organized.

It's also important to keep good communication between parents and art teachers. Keep us informed if there is something we need to know to help the art experience for your child at the Middle School to be extremely positive.
