APPLIED ARTS 2D
(Recommended for non-art majors)
A course designed for the non-art major to satisfy
1/2 of the Regents requirement. This one semester class will
introduce the students to the fundamentals of 2-D design while studying
the aesthetic qualities of traditional and contemporary art
movements. Students will appreciate the historical development of
art while exploring traditional and experimental techniques.
Studio sessions will explore painting, papermaking, felting and collage
towards the creation of an altered book. Units of Credit= .5
APPLIED ARTS 3D
(Recommended for non-art majors)
A course designed for the non-art major to satisfy
1/2 of the Regents requirement. This one semester course will
introduce the student to sculpture as an aesthetic experience exploring
art as form and function. Students will use the studeio
experience to explore traditional and experimental sculptural
techniques. Students will study the history and development of
sculpture while working on sculptural designs. Studio sessions
will include paper sculptures, paper mache, balsa foam relief and
assemblages. Units of Credit= .5
STUDIO IN ART
Students have the opportunity to work with various
drawing and painting media such as pencil, pen and ink, charcoal,
pastel, tempera and acrylic. Sculpting experience would include
such areas as additive and subtractive methods. Students will be
introduced to basic computer skills. Projects will develop
students' understaning of the formal, emotional and conceptual concerns
of the art-making process. The course will increase the students
awareness of art history, while expanding artistic judgement and an
overall sense of design in the world environment. Studio in Art
prepares the art major for advances courses, or allows the non-art
major one credit. Units of Credit= 1
DRAWING AND PAINTING I&II
(1/2 credit per semester, 1 full credit allowed)
Prerequisite: Studio in Art
Students are required to take Drawing and Painting I (Fall Semester) prior to taking Drawing and Painting II (Spring Semester)
This is an intermediate art course in which students
learn to handle a broad range of drawing and painting media as well as
mixed media. This is a hands-on course where students will
explore line, shape, space, value and texture. Various
composition types will be studied as a method for translating concepts
and ideas into two-dimensional visual images. Students will gain
understanding and technical skill by studying both historic and
contemporary artists, styles and theory. Units of Credit= .5 per semester
ADVANCED PAINTING I&II
(1/2 credit per semester, 1 full credit allowed)
Prerequisite: Studio in Art, Drawing and Painting recommended
Students are required to take Advanced Painting I ( Fall Semester)
followed by Advanced Painting II in order to develop proper relational
sequence of techniques and media.
This painting course will study and explore multiple painting amedia
and techniques. Students will study and experiment with different
methodsof composition in painting. The course will expand on the
student's knowledge of the elements and principles of design, color
theory and use of specialized techniques. Students will explore
watercolor, tempera, acyrlic and oil painting. The course will
study still life, landscapes and seascapes, natural and abstract
forms. The development of different styles and painterly
techniques will be assessed. Units of Credit= .5 per semester
SCULPTURE I&II
(1/2 credit per semester, 1 full credit allowed)
Prerequisite: Studio in Art
Students are required to take Sculpture I ( Fall Semester)
followed by Stulpture II in order to develop proper relational
sequence of techniques and media.
Students will explore ideas in three dimensions by using mass and
volume. Students will participate in a hands-on studio
experience, creating artworks "in-the round". By using aesthetic
and technical experiences, new forms adn ideas will evolve.
Students will gain dexterity, sensitivity and control over a wide range
of materials and processes. Methods of making sculpture will
include additive and subtractive processes encouraging the student to
express ideas in three-dimensional space. Units of Credit= .5 per semester
CONTEMPORARY CRAFTS
(One Semester)
Prerequisite: Studio in Art
This course is designed for the art major to explore the fine arts
aspects of crafts. Students will demonstrate a competence in
using the elements and principles of design to create art works based
on traditional and contemporary crafts. Students will explore
crafts as a means of self-expression and aesthetic design, and reflect
on the cultural influences through the ages. Student projects
will include work with metal, glass, fibers and clay. Units of Credit= .5
