STUDIO IN ART
(1 full credit)

Prerequisite: None

This newly redesigned Studio In art course provides students with the fundamentals of the art-making process. It is a hands -on, project -based course, which encourages students to develop their creativity through individual expression. Students will learn basictechniques of drawing, painting, sculpting and printmaking. All students interested in art, regardless of experience, are encouraged to take this course. Sketchbooks are required. This course satisfies the Regents requirement of 1 credit in art. Students attaining a 75% average or higher in Studio In Art will meet the prerequisite to take any upper level art course.  Units of Credit= 1


DRAWING AND PAINTING I&II
(1/2 credit per semester, 1 full credit allowed)

Prerequisite: Studio in Art
Students are required to take Drawing and Painting I (Fall Semester) prior to taking Drawing and Painting II (Spring Semester)
This is an intermediate art course in which students learn to handle a broad range of drawing and painting media as well as mixed media.  This is a hands-on course where students will explore line, shape, space, value and texture.  Various composition types will be studied as a method for translating concepts and ideas into two-dimensional visual images.  Students will gain understanding and technical skill by studying  both historic and contemporary artists, styles and theory.  Units of Credit= .5 per semester


PAINTING TECHNIQUES/PAINTING MIXED MEDIA
(1/2 credit per semester, 1 full credit allowed)

Prerequisite: Studio in Art, Drawing and Painting recommended
Students are required to take Painting Techniques ( Fall Semester) followed by Painting Mixed Media in order to develop proper relational sequence of techniques and media.
This painting course will study and explore multiple painting amedia and techniques.  Students will study and experiment with different methodsof composition in painting.  The course will expand on the student's knowledge of the elements and principles of design, color theory and use of specialized techniques.  Students will explore watercolor, tempera, acyrlic and oil painting.  The course will study still life, landscapes and seascapes, natural and abstract forms.  The development of different styles and painterly techniques will be assessed.  Units of Credit= .5 per semester

SCULPTURE I&II

(1/2 credit per semester, 1 full credit allowed)

Prerequisite: Studio in Art
Students are required to take Sculpture I ( Fall Semester) followed by Stulpture II in order to develop proper relational sequence of techniques and media.
Students will explore ideas in three dimensions by using mass and volume.  Students will participate in a hands-on studio experience, creating artworks "in-the round".  By using aesthetic and technical experiences, new forms adn ideas will evolve.  Students will gain dexterity, sensitivity and control over a wide range of materials and processes.  Methods of making sculpture will include additive and subtractive processes encouraging the student to express ideas in three-dimensional space.  Units of Credit= .5 per semester

CONTEMPORARY CRAFTS
(One Semester)

Prerequisite: Studio in Art
This course is designed for the art major to explore the fine arts aspects of crafts.  Students will demonstrate a competence in using the elements and principles of design to create art works based on traditional and contemporary crafts.  Students will explore crafts as a means of self-expression and aesthetic design, and reflect on the cultural influences through the ages.  Student projects will include work with metal, glass, fibers and clay. Units of Credit= .5

COMPUTER ART/ADVANCED COMPUTER ART
(1/2 Credit per semester, 1 full credit allowed)

Prerequisite: Studio in Art
This course is aimed at the development of technology, vocabulary and procedures of computer images, and using the computer as an artist’s tool. Students will study graphic design and contemporary computer artists. Students will apply their knowledge of the artelements: line, shape, color, value, and texture to computer-based images. This is a hands-on computer course, which focuses on developing communication skills and personal expression in the area of two-dimensional design. Successful completion of Computer Art is a prerequisite for Advanced Computer Art. 
Units of Credit= .5 per semester
