On Tuesday, November 14, 2006 A. J. Schmidt fifth grade students will be joining millions of other students nationwide in “Mix It Up at Lunch” day. A.J. Schmidt the fifth grade students are going to "Mix it up” by having the opportunity to sit with any of the other fifth grade students in our building.

Will they take a risk and sit with someone they do not know, or will they play it safe and sit with already established friends? This is the first year that the fifth grade students have this opportunity to participate in this national activity.

So why should we mix it up, well about 70% of students named the cafeteria as the school setting where social boundaries are most clearly drawn. This will give them an opportunity to expand their social boundaries and encourages our fifth grade students to cross lines and meet new people or reconnect with others that are not longer in their class.

“Mix it up” day is also great training for the Middle School. When they enter the middle school as sixth grade students they will have the opportunity to choose where they sit on a daily basis. If “Mix It Up” day goes well perhaps we will see more days like this before the end of the school year so stay tuned.
