Freshmen - Q: My child is not doing well in one of their full year classes, can they drop it to pick up a half year class? A: No, we can not drop full year classes. The half year classes were designed to accommodate only those students who took a half year course the first half of the year. These courses do not have the capacity to take on additional students. We also feel it is important for students to learn that when they sign up for a full year course they are making a year long commitment. This will become especially true if they decide to take AP courses later in their high school careers.
Juniors - Encourage you child to take the free practice SAT or ACT exam on ECOS. If they do not have an ECOS account, have them create one by going to www.ecos.princetonreview.com. Our member code is available from your child's guidance counselor.
Seniors - After filling out your FAFSA you should receive your SAR (Student Aid Report) within 1-3 days if you filed electronically, or 2-3 weeks if you filed a paper version. Call 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) if you do not receive your SAR in 3-4 weeks. After you receive your SAR check the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) on page 1 and check for mistakes on pgs 5-8. Note: If you see an asterisk next to your EFC it means you have been selected for verification and must provide documents to your prospective college(s) to verify the information on your FAFSA.
Students with Disabilities - Any WNY high school senior who has a speech, language, or hearing impairment and plans to further their education should apply for the Dena Goldstein Memorial Scholarship. Applications can be downloaded from www.shawny.org. The deadline is March 30, 2007.

Career Corner -
Jobs to consider based on growth:
Healthcare and social assistance including private hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, and individual and family services will grow by 30.3 percent and add 4.3 million new jobs. Employment growth will be driven by increasing demand for healthcare and social assistance because of an aging population and longer life expectancies. Also, as more women enter the labor force, demand for child-care services is expected to grow. Private educational services will grow by 32.5 percent and add 898,000 new jobs through 2014. Rising student enrollments at all levels of education will create demand for educational services.
Jobs to avoid based on growth:
Agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting. Overall employment in agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting is expected to decrease by 5.2 percent. Employment is expected to continue to decline due to advancements in technology. The only industry within this supersector expected to grow is support activities for agriculture and forestry, which includes farm labor contractors and farm management services. This industry is expected to grow by 18.2 percent and add 19,000 new jobs.
