The Inside Track for parents of:

All Students -
All of us in the Lake Shore Counseling Department extend our deepest condolences to the many people who have been affected by the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech.  Parents are often unsure of how, or even if, they should talk to their children about the tragedy.  Attached to this newsletter is a document with some helpful suggestions for talking to children about tragedy.

Student's can now take the knowledge test portion of their learner's permit at the high school counseling center.  Students, aged 16 or older, need to first register with Mrs. Catalano in the main office prior to the test dates.  The test is limited to eight students per test date.  Students will take the 15 minute long test in the Counseling Center during advisement.  Students who pass the test will be given a verification form to take to a local DMV office.

Sunset Bay is looking for students (16yrs. +)to build docks and a retainer wall.  Salary- $8.00 p/h.  See the job book in the Counseling Center for more information.

A Scholarship for ALL Students - The Sodexho Foundation (they provide our school lunches) is offering a $3,000 Sodexho STOP Hunger Award and Scholarship.  To be eligible, students must have demonstrated on-going commitment to their community by performing volunteer services impacting hunger in the United States at least within the last 12 months.  Volunteer services must be helping non-family members.  The selected students will each receive a $3,000 scholarship award and a $3,000 grant, in their name, for the hunger related charity of their choice.  Students must be nominated, so if your child qualifies and is interested in receiving this award, they need to see Mr. Tomasik in the Counseling Center sometime this week.

Military -
Sgt. Burke will be available in the Counseling Center during lunches on Thursday to meet with students interested in learning more about opportunities available in the Army.

Sophomores -   The representatives from U.B., Fredonia, Canisius, Buffalo State, and E.C.C. did a great job informing students about what makes a good college application.  It was a real eye opener for some, but that was the purpose of the presentation.  The representatives felt that it was a great idea to reach out to students while they still have time to make changes.  Lake Shore is the only school in the area to offer this opportunity to Sophomores, and based on the positive response from students, some of the representatives indicated that they are going to suggest this program to other schools in the area.  Please talk to your child about what they learned at the presentation.  Ask your child to see their GPA verification form (these are available from Mrs. Hageman in the Counseling Center office).  The GPA verification form contains all the information that is on your child's transcript.  Compare your child's GPA verification form to the sample transcripts distributed at the presentation. If your child misplaced the sample transcripts, additional copies are available in the Counseling Center.

Juniors -
There will be a college planning night - workshop for 11th grade students and their parents on Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00p.m. in the High School Auditorium.  If your child is planning on attending college, you and your child should attend this workshop.

Seniors -
Haven't decided on a college yet? Looking to make a difference?
