Do you have students looking for internship positions for the summer?  The Center for Children and Families (CCF) in the Psychology Department of the State University of New York at Buffalo announces positions for summer internships for high school students interested in working with children in a recreational summer program for children in the Buffalo area. Students will work within the Buffalo Public School District, with children enrolled in the Extended Learning Opportunity Program entering grades Kindergarten through six. The CCF is directed by William E. Pelham, Jr., Ph.D., who is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Pediatrics at SUNY Buffalo.
In the Summer Recreational Program, children and counselors are assigned to groups consisting of four counselors (two high school student counselors, an undergraduate student counselor, and one lead counselor) and 15 to 20 children. The children attend school during the morning, and participate in the recreational program during the afternoon.  Group activities include basketball, soccer, softball, kickball, and teeball, along with sports skills training, social skills training, and problem solving training. During these activities, counselors provide incentives (e.g., rewards, praise) to the children for positive behaviors such as following the rules of the activity and positive interactions with others. Staff members provide consequences (e.g., removing privileges, or providing time out) from the children for breaking rules or negative interactions with others. Counselors will plan activities, design and revise individualized programs and targets for children, and receive regular supervision.
Prior to the start of the internship all interns will be required to learn the definitions of the categories used in the behavior modification program.  During the first two weeks of the internship, interns will undergo intensive training conducted by the CCF staff.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend a weekly seminar on research and ADHD and related problems.  This seminar will enable participants to learn more about ADHD and to gain experience in the design and implementation of research in child psychopathology and psychotherapy.
Approximately 95 percent of the high school student counselors who worked in recent programs reported that working in the program was an experience that contributed significantly to their educational goals and that they would recommend it to others.  In addition, senior level staff reported that the counselors learned about working with children, how to respond appropriately to feedback from a supervisor, how to function independently, and how to be responsible at a workplace (e.g., arriving on time).
Interns will be required to attend training from Monday, June 25th-Friday June 29th from 8:30AM-3:00PM.  During the following week, training times will be determined by     individual schools and groups, but will be encompassed within the hours stated above.  July 4th will be an observed holiday.  During the program, interns will work on weekday afternoons, approximately 11:30-3:30 PM from July 9th-August 3rd.  These positions are intended for students seeking a rewarding internship for fulfillment of a community service requirement.  However, some positions are available for stipend.
