Reading is the foundation of a successful education. Children of all
ages improve this all-important ability by reading, reading, and
reading some more. Reading is such an important part of your child's
school day however reading for fun at home is a great habit to
encourage.

In a recent survey, more than half of all students said they spent just four minutes a day reading at home. They reported that they spent well over two hours a day watching television.
Research shows that kids who spend as little as 30 minutes a day reading books, magazines and newspapers are more likely to become good readers and do better in school. Summertime is a great time to rediscover and nurture the joy of reading with your children.
Following are some ideas and suggestions for igniting the book bug in your family:
-Reading aloud to children of all ages is one of the best ways to help them develop a love of books. It is also a way to spend special time with your children.
-Children who see their parents reading grow up to be readers themselves. This is one of those times where actions really do speak louder than words.
-Make reading easy and fun. Encourage your kids to read for fun and pick books that interest them. Check to see if books, magazines, and newspapers are as easy to get to as the TV. Summer is the perfect time to encourage reading in a fun place like under a shade tree, in a tent, in the car on a road trip or on a blanket at the beach or in the backyard. Remember, a trip to the library is exciting too!
If your child has lost interest in reading, don't make an issue out of it. Instead try to find reading materials on subjects that interest your child. Leave them around the house in easy reach. Subscribe to a magazine that they help you pick out. Odds are, your child will be back to reading in no time.
