“GROWING WITH ART”

The Planters of Lake Shore

By:  Cayla Guadalupe (FBLA)

The students of Lake Shore High School are at it again! “Growing with Art: The Planters of Lake Shore” is a community service project proposed by the Art Department at Lake Shore High School. This community service project involves building, painting, planting and displaying hand crafted planters in an effort to raise money to support Cradle Beach Camp. The project will not only serve to beautify our community and raise money for a worthwhile cause, but it will also provide a valuable learning experience for the students here at Lake Shore.

Students in the technology department are currently cutting and shaping the large planter boxes, which will then be painted by the students in the art department.  During the construction process Lake Shore’s FBLA Community Service Committee will be seeking out sponsors to help support the cause. Sponsors will be asked for a minimum donation of one hundred dollars per planter, with proceeds going to Cradle Beach Camp. The sponsors will have the opportunity to select a theme for their planter or choose one from a list provided by the Art Department. Themes could include, but are not limited to, flowers, landscapes, ice cream, water fronts etc. Artists will then use styles from art history to develop their “one of a kind” compositions for the planters.

FBLA is also looking for members of the community that are interested in donating their time by volunteering as “gardeners”.  These individuals will provide their gardening expertise and the plants for each of the planters.  After the planters have been completed, a reception will be held at Cradle Beach for the artists, sponsors, and gardeners. Once planted, the gardeners will arrange with the sponsors to deliver the planters to their designated locations. The planters will be put on display during the summer in public locations within the district. Locations will be chosen by the sponsors. At the end of the summer sponsors will take ownership of the planters.

Businesses or organizations interested in participating in the project as a sponsor or gardener please contact the FBLA Advisor, Mrs. Marla Schifano at 926-2285 or by e-mailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Planters are limited to first come first serve.
