**Principal’s Message**

 Dear Parents,

All 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be taking the New York State English Language Arts Assessment on Tuesday January 8th, and Wednesday January 9th.   Fourth grade students will also be tested on Thursday January 1Oth.

Testing will begin each morning at 9:10 AM and schedule adjustments have been made to allow all students to be tested at the same time.
Parents often ask for suggestions on what they can do to help their child prepare for standardized tests.  Here is how you can support your child in this experience:
·     Encourage your child to employ good study habits that are useful in test taking as well as in other work.  These habits include following directions carefully, avoiding careless errors, and rechecking their work.
·        Explain the purpose of the test.  Remind your child that this is not a test that a student can fail.  It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned in school.  It provides the school with valuable information that is used to develop curriculum and programs to better serve the needs of our students.
·        Let your child know that the test clearly shows what they have learned during their school experience.  Studying at the last minute for this test won’t help very much because the tests will cover more than can be learned in a few extra hours.
·        Let your child know that you consider the test important, but try not to be overly anxious.  Students who are calm and confident perform better on tests.
·        Be sure that your child gets plenty of sleep and has a good, nourishing, healthy breakfast.  Test taking is hard work and requires lots of energy.
·        Be sure that your child is at school on time.  Rushing and worrying about being late could affect performance on the test.
·        Remember to discuss the test with your child at the end of each day.

It is important to remember that,  “I CAN is 100 times more important than IQ!”
Thank you for discussing this with your child and for all that you do to support our educational programs.  All the best to our Highland families in 2008!!
