Exploring Careers at the Elementary Level

The month of April was college and career awareness month across the district.  Several activities were planned to help our students learn more about careers and higher education.  It is never too early to begin teaching children career awareness.  There are many skills developed at the elementary level that are important in the world of work....

  These include:
    -Responsibility
    -Cooperation
    -Problem Solving
    -Self-confidence
    -Tolerance
    -Conflict resolution

At the elementary level, relating schoolwork to specific jobs can help children understand that success in school can lead to success in life.  For example, a veterinarian uses science and math skills to know what is going on inside a sick animal's body, and to calculate the amount of medicine needed to treat it.

Talking with children about their interests is another way to create career awareness.
-If a child likes art, discuss how it can be used to design houses, clothing, and toys.
-If a child is social, discuss how being social is important when you are a teacher, lawyer, or any customer service professional.
-If a child is a math wiz, explain the importance of math in computer careers, engineering, and building things.

At JT Waugh Elementary, students and their families had the opportunity to learn about specific careers and have some food and fun, at the first annual Career Carnival on Friday, April 25th.  Over 250 students and family members attended the event.  Community members and parents volunteered their time to represent approximately 20 careers, and planned fun activities to help the students learn more about them.  The students rotated through different stations throughout the evening.  Two stations in the gym were filled with the career presenters.  In the cafeteria families enjoyed free pizza and beverages courtesy of the PTG. There was also a carnival station, where students enjoyed a bounce house, free cotton candy, popcorn, face painting, and a clown.  Parents and students had a great time, and the Career Carnival was a huge success and a wonderful culmination of college and career awareness month.
