Character Education Theme for the month is COURAGE.

May, 2008

 Dear Parents/Guardian:
As you can see from the calendar, May is a very busy month with testing, field trips, and our spring reading incentive program.

May will be No Homework month! That’s right No Homework!

Wm. T. Hoag tries to be a progressive and cutting edge school – keeping up with educational research and current practices. Students will be asked to study, practice math facts, and of course complete free reading. Additional assignments will not be given by the classroom teacher for homework, however individual students who have incomplete class work may have those items sent home for completion.  This concept is based on the philosophy of author, Alfie Kohn as well as the other educational researchers.  Our goal is to use this month to reflect on the impact of instruction as well as avoid any negative feelings students have toward learning.  Some parents may wish to assign extra activities to their children and that is at their own discretion.  Please share your opinions on this topic as we value your input.

*Testing schedule:May 12 – 16:  Our first and second grade students will be taking Terra Nova tests during the second full week of May.  These tests are used across the District to measure the student’s academic ability in the areas of Mathematics and English Language Arts.

Please be sure that if your child’s grade level is scheduled for testing that they make every effort to be in attendance.  It is also important that children are well rested and have a nutritious breakfast.

Please remember to exercise your right to vote during the Annual District Budget Vote being held on Tuesday, May 20th at the Senior High School.  The polls open at 7:00 am and will remain open until 9:00 pm.

*Mark your calendar and get your team together……May 20, the Hoag 500 at the Senior High. Watch for more information and the sign up sheet.

*May 19- May 30- Spring Reading Incentive – more information to follow.

*There is no school on Friday, May 23rd or Monday, May 26th in observance of Memorial Day.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Paula J. EastmanPrincipal, Wm. T. Hoag Elementary
