Eagle XC Splits With Williamsville East
Lake Shore traveled to Williamsville East for the Division 2 opener in cross country. The Flames jumped off the starting line
to take the lead. Scott Ryan, East's front runner claimed individual honors as he crossed the finish line in a 1st place time of 17:39.5. Lake Shore's Francis Ridge took 2nd place in 18:48 as the Eagle's first scorer. Williamsville East 22 outscored Lake Shore 37 to start the league season.
East claimed 3rd and 4th places before Tom Drzymala captured 5th place for LS. Freshman Andrew Ridge continued on a
strong season taking 7th place. The rush of five East runners crossed the line before Daryn Nephew placed 13th. Nephew has
been a steady influence on the team scoring this season. Devon Richards rounded off Lake Shore's scoring taking 16th place
but continues to improve weekly. Scoring: Williamsville East 1-3-4-6-8, (9,10) and Lake Shore 2-5-7-11-12.
In the girls race, Lake Shore started off strong with a 1-2-3-4 pack of runners which included Amy Kushner, Anne Cala, Kim Vona and Mikelle Cala. After the first lap, M.Cala and Vona were out in front. Cala stretched a lead in the final run to the finish
line with an individual win in 20:41. Vona was close behind as she flew to the finish line in 21:01. Anne Cala took 3rd place with
Amy Kushner capturing a valued 4th position. Zooming into 5th place was up-and-coming Kala Hornberger to lead a 1-2-3-4-5
sweep in the meet. Closing out the Eagle racers were good runs by Megan Dillon 8th and Mollie McGough 12th.
Lake Shore Runs McQuaid Invitational
On Saturday the Cross Country teams competed in the McQuaid Invitational in Rochester. This meet featured over 7,000 runners from 235 schools and 6 states and Canada.
Lake Shore's Francis Ridge paced the boys team with a 40th Place finish in 17:26. The team finished 23rd in the Unseeded AA-2 race. Teammates Tom Drzymala finished 143rd / 19:17, ace freshman Andrew Ridge followed close behind in 149th / 19:25 and Gary Ippolito pursued nearby in 153rd / 19:35. Fifth-man, Ken Terramiggi closed out the scoring at 192nd / 23:48.
In the Seeded AA-1 race, the Lady Eagles circled overhead with outstanding runs by Mikelle Cala 14th / 19:06, Captain Kim Vona ran her best race effort at 22nd / 19:26. Newcomer and a fast rising ace was Kayla Hornberger. Hornberger's run of 21:04 / 73rd place surprised the coach and team as she helped power the team to a 11th place in the team standings. The competition was very fast and the depth was strong. This race was on a State Meet like caliber and provided excellent experience for all runners.
The Eagle runners to follow were Anne Cala 101st / 21:46, Amy Kushner 132nd / 22:22, Mackenzie Dillon 164th / 23:01, Megan Dillon 206th / 24:11, Mollie McGough 241st / 26:30 and Amanda Arrigo 247th / 27:17.
At the Modified level, Miriam Ridge ran her strongest race to finish 53rd / 10:44 for the 1.48 mile distance. The Modified boys raced and saw Ian Yargeau place 51st in 9:00 while Trey Franey 112th ran 9:42. Alex Novara recorded 10:38 for
194th place and John Wasielewski posted 11:31 for 253rd place.
The varsity teams challenge Hamburg on Tuesday at Chestnut Ridge Park.
