Junior Erik Marx picked a great game to straighten out his free throw shooting, as he went 9 for 9 from the line to lead the Lake Shore Eagles to a 55-50 victory over the Billies of Williamsville South. Marx struggled from the line in the last outing against West Seneca East, hitting just 5 of 8, but came through against South including nailing 8 for 8 from the stripe in the fourth quarter. The junior finished with 22 points while classmate Sean Bellomo added 18 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. Senior Jason Radwan scored all of his 7 points in the second half, adding 6 assits and 5 steals. Bellomo picked up his fourth foul in the fourth quarter and went to the bench. South stormed back and took a 2 point lead 44-42 on a Armaan Wood lay-up, but senior Matt Boye nailed a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 45-44 lead. Junior Matt Kennedy played well in relief grabbing 4 rebounds and having 3 steals. The Eagles play on Tuesday evening at Williamsville East and on Friday at home agaisnt Sweet Home.

February 2nd, 2009 - Second Half Rally Lifts Eagles Over West Seneca East
The Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the Trojans of West Seneca East 56-43 on Friday night to push their league record to 6 wins and 1 loss.  The Eagles, started out slow and took a 1 point lead into the locker room at halftime, with senior Jason Radwan hitting 2 free throws with .7 seconds left in the half to give LSC a 26-25 advantage.  Lake Shore came charging out of the locker room behind 20 second half points by junior Erik Marx.  “We ran a set sideline out of bounds play with our possession to start the half, hoping to get Erik going,” noted Coach Dan Gerken.  “Jason sold it pretty well on the perimeter and Sean (Bellomo) made a great pass to Erik as he cut backdoor,” added Gerken.  That got things going for both Marx and the Eagles as they scored the first 12 points of the second half.  Junior Sean Bellomo had 14 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks, while Radwan, mourning the loss of his grandfather the day before, added 9 points, in a real gritty effort.  “I am so proud of Jason’s maturity and how he handled himself,” commented the 10th year Coach.  “It was an emotional day and week for him.  He unselfishly put set those feelings and emotions aside for the team and played with another outstanding game for us.”  Lake Shore faces Williamsville South at home on Thursday in an important divisional battle.

January 26th - Lake Shore Defeats Gowanda; Retains Emerson Cup
Well, it is Western New York and we all know that the weather can dictate our schedules in a variety of ways. Despite the unpredictable weather, the boys Lake Shore Varsity Basketball team were finally able to take to the court to defend their title as champions of the Jim Emerson Memorial Tip-Off Tournament. The championship game had been delayed due to weather conditions on the weekend of December 5th and 6th.  The LSC Eagles defeated the Eden Raiders on Friday, December 5th 62-44 behind 22 points by junior Erik Marx and 13 points and 10 rebounds by classmate Sean Bellomo.  However, the other scheduled game was unable to be played due to Silver Creek canceling after-school activities.  The game between Silver Creek and Gowanda was played the following Tuesday, December 9th, with Gowanda prevailing in overtime 68-58.  This led to a rescheduling of the championship game between the Eagles and the Panthers.  Lake Shore jumped out early, taking a 24-4 first quarter lead.  The second quarter action was highlighted by a beautiful backdoor feed from junior RC Hubbard to Bellomo for a two handed power dunk.  Lake Shore kept the cushion the rest of the game and took home the Emerson Cup with a 54-33 victory.  The Eagles were again led by Marx who netted 19 points, while Bellomo tossed in 13 and senior Jason Radwan added 11.

The tournament was named after former Lake Shore Varsity Basketball coach Jim Emerson.  Coach Emerson died suddenly in March of 2001 as he prepared for retirement.  He coached in 528 games with 326 of them at the Varsity level.  He is the winningest coach in LSC history with 123 victories in his 16 years at the Varsity helm.  While present Varsity coach Dan Gerken played JV ball under Emerson, his former varsity coach, Bob Uszacki, still keeps close ties to the program.  Recently, Coach Uszacki flew into town from his Florida residence to see a couple Lake Shore games.  Uszacki and Gerken have remained close over the years, partaking in a 30 year tradition of going to the 1000 Islands on an annual fishing trip with about 20 other LSC Basketball alumni.  Unfortunately for both Gerken and Uszacki, the games were snowed out and postponed until mid February.  Gerken had arranged with Uszacki to speak to his players before their Williamsville East game.  “As bad as I feel for Coach, it is the players who really missed out,” lamented Gerken.  “They missed out on hearing the words from a man who was born to coach and who gives it to you straight.  I was looking forward to not only seeing him but learning from him while he was here.”  Gerken went out and bought a new digital video camera and is sending Coach Uszacki each of the Lake Shore games for his input and feedback.  “He will always be my coach, I just hope he doesn’t have me run suicides for some of the bad shots and decisions we have made.  If he does, you can bet I will run them,” joked Gerken.  The Eagles play at home again on Friday, January 30th against West Seneca East.  JV tips-off at 5:00 while the Varsity takes to the floor immediately following.

January 23rd - Second Half Rally Lifts Eagles over Chiefs
The first half of Thursday evenings game between the visiting Lake Shore Eagles and the Iroquois Chiefs was not what Eagle Coach Dan Gerken was hoping for. A slow, sluggish first quarter was followed by an equally un-enthused second stanza that left Lake Shore down 37-29 as they headed into the locker room. "We were not executing well in the first half," noted Gerken. "We had some bad decisions on the defensive end coupled with some poor possessions and shot selection on the offensive side." This was highlighted by the fact that junior Sean Bellomo, the 6'7" center for the Eagles, had only 1 field goal in the first half. That was a three-pointer! Senior Jason Radwan scored 10 of his game high 24 points in the first half to help keep the game relatively close. Lake Shore's offensive improved with Bellomo getting some much needed post touches and scoring 12 points in the third quarter, but their defense needed some attention. The boys from Angola did not disappoint their fans who traveled to Elma for this ECIC Division II contest. As they took the floor to start the fourth quarter, they stepped up their defensive pressure and for just over 7 minutes held their hosts to just 7 points. The offensive progress for the Eagles continued as they tallied 25 points in the final frame, including 8-10 from the free throw line, to take the win 73-66, Bellomo also tossed in 24 points while grabbing 16 boards and blocking 7 shots. Junior Erik Marx added 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists while Radwan also contributed 9 assists. The win moved the Eagles to 5-1 in their conference

January 21st - Eagles Soar Over Spartans of Starpoint
The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Basketball team returned to action after being sidelined by the weather and showed no ill effects as they defeated the Spartans of Starpoint, 59-22, in ECIC Division II action. Erik Marx led all scorers with 23 points while Sean Bellomo added 16 points and 4 blocks. The Eagles played great defense but were frustrated early by the Starpoint zone taking a 25-3 lead into the locker room at half. They made an adjustment to their offense and did much better in the second half. The Eagles play again at Iroquois on Thursday, January 22nd.

January 10th - Blue Devils Hang On Despite Late Rally by Eagles
The Lake Shore Varsity basketball team headed to the bench at the end of the first quarter and did not like what they saw when they looked up at the scoreboard. 18-3 in favor of East Aurora was not the kind of start Coach Dan Gerken was looking for on this Saturday afternoon during the second game of back to back contests. The Eagles had gotten off to a slow start following the previous evening's shootout in Williamsville. "I think we started out a bit slow and then we started to feel sorry for ourselves," said Coach Gerken. The Eagles played even with the visiting Blue Devils and went "downstairs" to their team room at half time. "They knew I was not pleased with the effort. They had convinced themselves that they were tired from the previous night. I refused to accept that and convinced them that we had more left in the tank," added Gerken. The Eagles came out in the second half and went on a run of their own. They climbed all the way back to tie the game, highlighted by junior Sean Bellomo's monster dunk. But alas, fatigue finally did take its toll as LSC gave up a couple of late offensive boards for second chance points. Lake Shore was forced to foul to stop the clock and the Blue Devils pushed the final margin to 58-48. Bellomo led the Eagles with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Erik Marx and Jason Radwan added 13 and 12 points respectively.

January 9th - LSC Suffers First League Loss
The Lake Shore Varsity basketball team dropped its first league contest 81-71 at the hands of 8th ranked Williamsville South in Williamsville. Junior Erik Marx broke out of a two game slump to pump in 30 points in the effort. Classmate Sean Bellomo added 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting and snared13 rebounds in the shootout.

December 29th - Strong Second Half leads Eagles to Win in Scarcello Memorial at Bishop-Timon
Junior Sean Bellomon powered his way to 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks as the Lake Shore Eagles defeated West Seneca West 49-43 in the consolation game of the Mark Scarcello Memorial Holiday Tournament at Bishop Timon-St. Jude. While turnovers were once again an issue, Bellomo's torrid shooting from the field (9-16) helped keep the Eagles in front. RC Hubbard had a career high 9 points, 5 steals and 3 assists in a relief role to help pace the Lake Shore win.

December 28th - Orchard Park Leaves Fallen Eagles in their Quake

The Orchard Park Quakers overwhelmed the Lake Shore Eagles 75-45 in the first round of the Mark Scarcello Memorial Holiday Tournament at Bishop Timon-St. Jude. The Eagles were completely dominated as they committed 27 turnovers and shot a dismal 36% from the field. The boys from Angola were led by junior Sean Bellomo who had 17 points and 11 rebounds for his seventh consectuive double/double. Senior Jason Radwan added 14 points. Lake Shore will face West Seneca West in the consolation final on Monday, December 29th at 6:00 pm.

December 22nd - Lake Shore "Weathers" Trip To Starpoint

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Basketball team overcame a poor first half and a snowy drive to Starpoint on the night before Christmas eve to defeat a pesky Spartan team from Starpoint. The Eagles were led by their inside attack of Sean Bellomo who tallied 17 while grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior Jason Radwan added 12 points and had 6 assists. The Eagles will play Orchard Park following the Christmas holiday on December 27th in the Mark Scarcello Memorial Holiday Tournament at Bishop Timon.

December 15th, 2008 - Eagles Defend Their Nest in Win Over Chiefs of Iroquois

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Basketball team improved its record to 4 wins and 1 loss with a 61-43 victory over the visiting Iroquois Chiefs.  The Eagles came out a bit flat in the first half finding themselves on the short end of a 24-23 score at the break.  They were anything but flat in the second half as they charged out of the locker room to take command of the game, outscoring their opponent 38-19 in the second half.   Junior Erik Marx led all scorers with 26 while junior Sean Bellomo tossed in 15 including a monster slam dunk to ice the win.  Marx and Bellomo each snared 10 and 12 rebounds respectively while senior Jason Radwan added 11 points, all coming in the second half, to go along with his 6 assits, 4 steals, 4 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in another terrific all-around game.

December 12th, 2008 - Lake Shore Prayers Go Unanswered Against Bishop Timon

A 19 point effort by junior Erik Marx, coupled with a 15 point/13 rebound outburst by classmate Sean Bellomo was not enough to defeat the hot shooting Tigers of Timon in the ECIC/MMAA challange held at St. Mary's of Lancaster on Thursday evening. Timon jumped out to a 38-26 halftime lead hitting 6 of their 8 three point shots. The Eagles battled back in the third quarter cutting the lead to 4, 46-42 but could not close the deal in the fourth. Lake Shore was outscored 13-5 in the final stanza and had several key turnovers. Lake Shore returns to action at home on Tuesday, December 16th as they take on the Chiefs of Iroquois. The Junior Varsity tips-off at 5:00 with the Varsity taking the floor immediately afterward.

December 10th, 2008 - Eagles Extend Streak to 3

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Basketball team extend its win streak to 3 games as they defeated divisional foe West Seneca East 63-50 on Tuesday evening.  The Eagles were led by junior Sean Bellomo who hit for 28 points while collecting 15 rebounds and blocking 4 shots.  Senior Jason Radwan added 13 points and dished off for 7 assists in the win. East attempted to shut down the Eagles leading scorer, junior Erik Marx by putting their best defender on him. Marx found other ways to contribute. He grabbed 13 rebounds and added 4 assists and 2 steals. Senior Jon Triftshauser, who did not play basketball last year, added 4 points and 6 boards in his best effort all year. Lake Shore faces Bishop Timon-St. Jude on Thursday night.

December 8th, 2008 - Eagles Remain Unbeaten

The Boys Varsity Basketball team remained undefeated by beating a pesky Eden Raider team 64-48 on a snowy Friday evening.  The Eagles were led by junior Erik Marx who had 22 points and junior Sean Bellomo who tossed in 12 points to go along with his 14 rebounds.  Junior Tom Fritz added 9 and seniors Jason Radwan and Matt Boye did an outstanding job on both the offensive and defensive end.  The game was a first round contest in the Jim Emerson Memorial Tip-Off Tournament.  The other first round match-up between Silver Creek and Gowanda was postponed due to Silver Creek cancelling after-school activities on Friday.  That game will be played on Tuesday at Silver Creek with the consolation and championship round remaining a scheduling dilemma for all four teams.  The tournament is named after former Lake Shore coach Jim Emerson who passed away suddenly in 2001.  The Eagles return to action on Tuesday at West Seneca East and Thursday in the ECIC/Monsignor Martin Athletic Association Challenge against Bishop Timon at St. Mary's of Lancaster.

December 5th, 2008 - Eagles Open Up Season With Win Against St. Francis

On Wednesday, December 3rd, the Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated a very athletic Red Raider team from St. Francis of Athol Springs, 62-54.  The Eagles were led offensively by Junior Erik Marx who tossed in a career high 23 points to go along with his 10 rebounds and 5 steals.  Classmate Sean Bellomo added 12 points and 14 rebounds while senior Jason Radwan played an outstanding game running the offense and contributing 11 points including 3 long range 3 pointers.
